30 Days of Writing-Day Twenty Three

23. How long does it usually take you to complete an entire story—from planning to writing to posting (if you post your work)?

Well, this varies hugely! I think though, that the consensus my writing is telling me is at least a year if not two. My flash fiction pieces usually take about 2 weeks to 1 month from start to finish. Sometimes a little less. My short fiction takes about a year, depending. I’ve been working on one piece that’s almost ready and its been about a year and a half since I wrote it. My WIP novel lengths take much longer. My current piece has taken almost 6 years! (I’m rounding up now, instead of down)

My process is usually this—write, plan, write more, edit 1, write again, edit 2, rest, edit 3. Something like that describes the process. I like to think of the 1st writing as an exploration, so really after planning/edit 1 I have a ‘1st draft.’ Not all my stories follow this example. And many of them are currently resting!
